The HIV virus lowers immunity i.e the capacity
to fight infection.
HIV infected person may have no signs and symptoms
of disease for 8 to 10 years.

mother to her child during pregnancy or during labour
or during breast feeding.
* Nearly half of all new infections in the world today
are among people aged 14 to 25 years. The first confirmed
evidence of HIV infection in India came in 1986
* Based on current data, an estimated 40.3 million people
are now living with HIV. Out of these 5.1 millions are
Indians. The AIDS epidemic has claimed 3.1 million lives
in 2005. alone; more than half a million were children.
